ABOUT - BROWNIE MARY DEMOCRATIC CLUB
- Los Angeles County:
The Los Angeles County Chapter of the Brownie
Mary Democratic Club received its charter in 2013: Loren Brauner
is the President and Founder.
Lanny Swerdlow RN founded the first Brownie
Mary Democratic Club in Riverside County in June 2012, igniting
a movement that currently includes four Chapters (and growing):
Riverside, Los Angeles, Sacramento and San Francisco.
The most recent Gallop, Rasmussen and Angus-Reid
polls agree that the majority of Americans now support the legalization
of marijuana, and the quickest route is through our local, state
and national political party system.
Brownie Mary-LA works within the Democratic Party structure to
benefit both the Party and the cannabis community by registering
Democrats to vote and helping pro-cannabis Democratic representatives
get elected - whether as City Council members, Judges, City Attorneys,
State legislators, Governors, or the President of the United
MEDICAL CANNABIS IN CALIFORNIA:
In 1996 California passed the Compassionate
Use Act, the first state to allow qualified patients an affirmative
legal defense for the medicinal use of cannabis.
The California Legislature has tried and
repeatedly failed to pass statewide medical cannabis legislation.
This has left regulation largely in the hands of the courts or
This failure to clarify the rights of medical
cannabis patients has resulted in tremendous confusion and expense
at the local level, because each municipality and county is left
to devise their own set of laws.
Eighteen years later, the lack of regulation
at the state level has resulted in an inept patchwork of local
regulations that allows outright bans (in defiance of state law),
unregulated growth of unlicensed collectives, homes being raided,
patients and providers facing federal jail time, DUIs (even when
no inebriation is proved), loss of jobs, denial of live saving
organ transplants, loss of federal housing, assistance and veteran
benefits, and even removal of children from the homes of law
abiding parents who are patients.
Without sensible statewide regulation,
safe access to medical cannabis, which was intended by the Compassionate
Use Act, is in constant jeopardy.
How will California handle adult use legalization
right around the corner?
The Brownie Mary movement is inspired by
Mary Jane Rathbun who, in her late 70s, was nicknamed 'Brownie
Mary' by the press after getting arrested three times for persistently
distributing marijuana infused brownies to suffering AIDS patients
in San Francisco hospitals (cannabis provides documented pain
and anti-nausea symptom relief).
